Overview

For my first project in GDS210 for my 5th trimester at SAE, I was in a group of 3 and was

tasked with creating a 2D arcade style game for mobile, complete with pixel art style

graphics and an 8-bit musical soundtrack. In our group, we decided on creating an

adventure themed game similar to theme of films such as Indiana Jones. We decided on a game that involved a character with a rope who runs continuously in an endless runner style level, set inside an Aztec style temple. I was tasked with designing the background for the level, as well as creating the main menu portion of the scene (we used a single scene for the entire game) and programming the end game stats screen and the UI buttons for the scene. I was also tasked with creating the 8-bit soundtrack for the game.

Successes

Throughout this project, I feel that I did a good job in completing the tasks that I was

assigned in my group, even though I did not have many tasks. I also felt that I engaged

well with the initial process of coming up with the game concept with my group, and that I was beneficial to this process. I was also successful in completing the tasks I was

assigned, which included, creating a main menu and end game screen complete with

buttons and stats, and editing the associated scripts for these components to work

properly. I was also successful in creating a single 8-bit piece of music for the game’s 8-bit soundtrack, although this was not used in the final project.

Failures

During this project, I feel as though I failed to make the best effort I could have made with regards to working with my group and completing the tasks I was tasked with in a timely manner. I feel that I could have made more effort to engage with my group, and could have taken on more of the workload and completed it to a better standard. I also failed to create the soundtrack for the game in a timely manner, and although I did finish creating the soundtrack, it was not used in the final build of the project. I also missed several classes during the first few weeks of this trimester, something which I will try and improve upon in the coming weeks of this unit.

Lessons Learned

During this project, I feel as though I could have done more tasks and made a greater

effort to engage with my group and with the project we were working on. I learnt a lot from this project in that my efforts with it, prompted me to lift my game and increase my attention and efforts towards this course for the next two projects in this unit. I missed several classes at the beginning of the trimester which also prompted me to improve my performance in this unit. I plan to greatly improve my performance, marks, attendance, and efforts towards group projects, in the coming weeks and for the rest of this unit.
